Preparing a room for a new baby
If you have a baby on the way, there is a good chance you may be feeling a little overwhelmed by the level of planning ahead.
A major part of this involves the preparation of a room for the little boy or girl to live. While this in itself is not actually that difficult – the youngster is unlikely to critique style choices – you will want the infant to be as happy as possible with its new surroundings as it gets used to the world.
Basics
The essential parts of a baby’s bedroom are those bits that keep the child warm and healthy, but there are certain other basics that you should ensure are in place before the kid takes up its residence.
If you are starting with a bare room, check the walls for signs of damp or mould and make sure that the windows do not let in a draught. Then check for any sharp edges on the floor, lower parts of the walls and sideboards. Remove them with sandpaper and wire wool or cover them.
Once safety has been ensured, take the time to check that electricity sockets work properly and that the light from outside can be blocked out. If the room cannot be made dark enough, then put up some curtain rails and add a thick curtain, since this should help with daytime sleeps.
Decoration
The rest of the room design is basically a luxury, but this does not stop it being an important and fun part of the parenting process. Whether or not you want your child to live in a fantastical playground of colours and shapes is up to you; who knows, it could keep your baby gurgling with pleasure for longer!
At the same time, try to avoid spending all of your savings on your baby’s room, they are still very young and have many years ahead of them to drain your resources. For now, make them as comfortable as possible and enjoy the ride.
