Drywall mold – a hidden danger
Drywall is a material used in constructing walls and ceilings and is made of gypsum that is pressed between 2 sheets of paper. It is a popular material used for building properties throughout Canada in areas such as Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Aylmer and Gatineau. However, should a drywall become damp or wet and not dried thoroughly, immediately, it is susceptible to mold growth.
Drywall mold is a hidden danger in that you are not always aware that mold exists in the drywall, or by how much it has spread. A drywall can become wet for a variety of reasons, i.e. a flood or a burst pipe, but there is also the undetected source of moisture and that is an unseen leak that seeps slowly over a period of time – very damaging. If a wet, moldy drywall is not removed and replaced immediately, it will potentially weaken the whole structure.
As with all mold where the spores in the air can seriously affect your health, from coughing and sneezing to asthma and bronchitis, mold in drywalls is just as bad. Detecting a moldy drywall is not always as easy as it sounds; however look out for cracked, peeling or bulging paint, any discolouration to the wall or paper, a musty odour, or signs that your health is suffering.
If you suspect you have mold in your drywalls, call in the professionals, like Mold Busters, immediately as they have the equipment and know-how in dealing with these types of mold problems. Mold Busters’ experienced team will be able to assess the extent of the mold in your drywall using damp monitors. If it hasn’t spread too far, it could mean that you may not have to replace the whole wall. They will cut out the contaminated part of the drywall and replace it with a new part. However, if the mold growth is extensive, it will mean remove the whole wall and replacing it. Any drywall that is unpainted will definitely need completely replacing because it is a porous material. Once the new piece of drywall has been fitted into place, drywall screws attach it to the wooden beams and then a joint compound is applied and left to dry, usually 24 hours. If the drywall is painted, then it is likely that you will only need to remove the contaminated part because the mold is predominantly on the surface and should not have penetrated the drywall itself.
Mold Busters will also use a HEPA vacuum in the room to remove any remaining spores and to make sure the remaining drywall mold is completely dry.
